Emergency Prepardness Day 2

Sanitation is not a dirty word!!
What causes even more danger than an actual natural disaster? Improper sanitation practices being followed in the aftermath of the emergency situation. The Red Cross has said that sanitation is the biggest problem after a natural disaster. If you have improper sanitation, disease spreads quickly and many will have diarrhea and other illnesses. Cleanliness is vital in emergencies.

Day 2:

A natural disaster occurred a number of days ago.  Your power has been restored but you don't have access to your sewage systems.  You are not sure how long you will be without water.  So you don't want to flush the toilets and waste that water.  O.K.  we will handle the portable toilet at the meeting but I at least want you to go onto the web and learn about how you will need to handle the waste.  You will have enzyme packets to throw into your liners, but then what....... Learn and Report....
AND... here are your tasks!

**( I do not expect anyone to not use running water today ...... only the mom's for a shower!, enjoy the Holiday - just thinking What if?)

Toiletology 101

1- you can not put it off any longer...you NEED a shower....BADLY.  Take a shower today without using any running water, Yes you have to do this!

2- practice with your family the correct steps for turning off the water supply to your home.
Of course leave it on we are not asking your to really turn it off.

3- Inventory items in your home to help with first aid - should you need to disinfect a wound without water.

Today's Goal:  Learn about and use proper sanitation practice in a crisis!

How to convert a flush toilet into an emergency toilet.

1. Line the inside of a toilet bowl, 5 gallon pail, or another appropriately sized waste container with two heavy-duty plastic garbage bags.
2. Place kitty litter, fireplace ashes, or sawdust into the bottom of the bags.
3. At the end of each day, the bagged waste should be securely tied and removed to a protected location such as a garage, basement, outbuilding, and so on, until a safe disposal option is available.
4. Residents may dispose of the waste in a properly functioning public sewer, or septic system, or they may bury the waste on their own property.
Note: During a declared emergency, these bags may be included with the regular garbage if a public announcement has been made that allows this method of disposal.

Day 2: Sanitation ( you can print this)

NOTES:

A natural disaster occurred a number of days ago. Power has been restored, but you still don’t have access to your sewage systems. You don’t know how long you will be without water so you do not want to waste your supply by flushing it down the toilet ... AND it’s about time you shower. You can’t put it off any longer.

Today’s Goal: Learn about and use proper sanitation practices in a crisis

Daily Evaluation Questions (Things to Ask Yourself)
·       What is your plan for dealing with emergency sanitation? (flush with stored water, use a bucket sanitation kit, dig a latrine in your backyard)
·       How was your experience using your alternate sanitation methods? What did your family members think of it?
·       What could you do to improve your sanitation kit/plan?
·       What ideas do you have to make showering/bathing easier, use less water, etc.?
·       What did you learn from the evaluation of your first aid items
